Chapter 26: Half The Story

I waited. And slowly the world began to change—from bright and warm and wonderful back to ordinary. The rush I’d felt when I realized that I was at the center of the universe was fading. The lightness I’d felt when I realized I was a mistake was fading. The warmth I’d felt when I realized I was surrounded by family was fading. For a few minutes the way I saw my life and my relationship to the universe had been different. Exceptional. Now it was ordinary.

“It’s fading,” I said to God.

“That’s the next thing you need to know. If you do nothing, every good feeling fades.”

“I know that now,” I said.

“And the second thing you need to know is how to get that feeling back,” said God.

“What’s that?” I asked.

“Work,” said God. “Practice!”
